The Old Smokey Steering Committee (OSSC) is an informal organization of community stakeholders from Coconut Grove and Miami-Dade County who are concerned about the adverse health effects and soil/water contamination from the former City of Miami trash incinerator, Old Smokey. OSSC filed a petition with the federal Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry in May and November of 2014. The OSSC requested that the agency perform a public health assessment of those living in the surrounding areas of Old Smokey and establish a disease registry if necessary.
